8. Also in the regression phase, you may only remember the good things about your home country. Your homeland may suddenly seem marvelously wonderful; all the difficulties that you had there are forgotten and you may find yourself wondering why you ever left (hint: you left to learn English!). You may now only remember your home country as a wonderful place in which nothing ever went wrong for you. Of course, this is not true, but an illusion created by your culture shock 'disease.'

Part of the reason for regression is stress. Stress can acutally produce disease. One of the ways stress can hurt us is that it can cause skin problems. Unfortunately, when you are overseas, skin problems can be very scary. It is difficult to talk to people about it and you may feel shy about going to a doctor in a foreign culture.

If you had the same kind of problem in your homeland, it probably would not seem so scary; however, your fears are made stronger by the fact that you are under more stress.

This is why it is important to take good care of yourself. However, if you have any kind of health problem, make sure you take the time to get help. Sickness will only increase your stress level. Don't be shy about health problems, they are important and should be taken care of.
