PhD 1987 in linguistic anthropology at the University of Toronto
-dissertation on the history of Tok Pisin, one of the three official languages of Papua New Guinea

M.A. 1982 in linguistic anthropology at McMaster University
-dissertation on the phonology of Lusi and Kabana, two Austronesian languages of Papua New Guinea

B.A. 1978 in linguistics at the University of Toronto
-taught linguistics and anthropology courses at McMaster University and the University of Toronto from 1980 to 1991

-conducted linguistic fieldwork in Papua New Guinea in 1978, 1981, 1982, and 1988

ESL
-I received my Certificate of Teaching English as a Second Language at the University of Toronto in 1990
-I have taught ESL courses at the University of Toronto, at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, and at Okanagan University College in Kelowna, British Columbia
-I have taught various ESL courses at all levels since 1989
-I currently teach writing, reading, and integrated skills mostly at the advanced levels and conduct a support seminar for international students in first-year English
-I also taught linguistics for teachers of ESL for Brock University in 1991-1992
-I have been and continue to be involved in several curriculum development projects and in curriculum revision
-I am currently teaching OUC's TESL Certificate courses: crosscultural workshop, teaching listening/speaking (for native speakers and for visiting nonnative-speaker EFL teachers), improving one's listening/speaking (for visiting nonnative-speaker EFL teachers), overview of methodology, and applied linguistics

PERSONAL
-hobbies include reading trashy novels, writing trashy humour, dancin' and dishin,' and listening to world music
-I stay fit by hiking, camping, bicycling, cross-country skiing, kayaking, and lifting weights
-I am a guerilla gardener, devoted to spreading the message of organic gardening and heritage seeds and I grow fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowers
-I enjoy exotic cooking and have a weakness for chocolate
